Pongal and Makar Sankranti are considered as the harvest festival and is celebrated on 14 January every year.  Pongal festival is celebrated by offering prayers to the Lord Surya (sun) in Tamil Nadu. Whereas it is called Makar Sankranti in the Northern parts of the country and Lohri in Punjab.  No festival is completed without the delicious food and the festivities prepared at home or bought from the online grocery store

Here is the list of popular Pongal and Makar Sankranti Recipes:

1. Chakkara Pongal 

Chakkara Pongal is made during Pongal from the harvested rice and is offered to Lord Sun. It is made with rice, jaggery, clarified butter, dry fruits, etc. and is loved by the young and adults of the family. 

2. Ven Pongal

This is a spicier Pongal that is made with rice, clarified butter, pepper pods, salt, dry fruits etc.  It is served hot with coconut chutney, sambar or rasam. It is considered one of the special dishes that is prepared in most of the South Asian households during Pongal.

3. Payasam/  Kheer

Pongal cannot be imagined without the delicious and sweet payasam or the kheer (Paal Payasam). This traditional kheer or the rice pudding is made from rice, milk, grated coconut, sugar or jaggery and lots of dry fruits.

4. Rava Kesari   

Kesari is a delicious sweet that melts in the mouth. It is easy to make, takes hardly 15 minutes and is tempting. Rava Kesari is made from semolina, clarified butter, sugar, kesar, and dry fruits.

5. Bisi Bele Bath

The Bisi Bele Bath is made with rice, clarified butter, vegetables, salt and a bit of spices. The Bisi Bele Bath is served hot with the appalam along with some clarified butter on top of it.  It is a complete meal with loads of vegetables such as beans, peas, carrots etc. that satisfies your hunger and tummy. 

6. Chikkis

Chikkis is made with jaggery and nuts during Pongal and Makar Sankranti. It is made by mixing Peanuts and jaggery together that is crispy, and hard, yet sweet and tasty. The til chikki is made with jaggery and sesame seeds when mixed together along with some cardamom powder. Another version of Chikki is made from dry fruits such as almonds, pistachio, and cashew nuts. The kurmure chikki is made from puffed rice and jaggery.

7. Til Laddu 

Til Laddu is a favourite among children. They are traditional dishes of Makar Sankranti made in Maharashtrian and North Indian households. They are made from jaggery (gur) and til along with some nuts and cardamom. 

8. Moong dal Khichdi

This khichdi is made with a few ingredients and spices.  There is no onion or garlic used in making this recipe. This khichdi recipe includes green moong dal, rice, salt, cumin seeds, etc.

9. Urad Dal Kachori recipe 

This soft, salty, crispy and delicious Kachori is made from white urad dal, flour and spices. This is made on the occasion of Makar Sakranti in northern parts of the country.
